Former California Inspection Station

Route 66, Daggett, CA

East < GO > West

Countless millions of motorists were required to stop at this Agriculture Inspection Station and declare and dispose of any fruits, vegetables, or plants they had with them when they entered California.

GPS: 34.848209, -116.796211

I can remember the first time I was here way back in 1960. My family was on our way to Los Angeles and since we couldn't take the fresh fruit we had in the car with us, Dad insisted we just sit there and eat it all because it cost too much to just throw away! That was not my favorite meal on the trip. This station has been replaced by one on I-40 east of Needles..

This was the third inspection station to be built in or near Daggett. It was in operation from 1953 to 1967. There used to a separate building to the right of the inspection shed and a large sign between the shed and the highway. The sign simply said Agricultural Inspection Station. See the postcard below.

The first inspection station in the Daggett area was built in 1923 at a cost of $600.00. Officials inspected 59,132 vehicles at that station in 1926, the year Route 66 was established. The second one was built in 1930. That station was at the intersection of "A" (Daggett-Yermo Rd) and National Old Trails (Route 66) across from Ma Millets Cafe.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
