Daggett Garage
Santa Fe Ave., Daggett, CA
Phone:
The Daggett Garage has stood in this spot since about 1912 after the building
had been moved twice after originally being an 1880s railroad repair shop
miles away. In the mid-1920s there was a canopy sticking out from the
at the corner on the far left in this photo. The canopy covered the pump
island and provided shade while a car while it was being filled with gas.
There is quite a bit of ghost writing on the west end of the building.
In
the 1920s Robert M. Campbell operated the garage which sold groceries,
ice and cold drinks as well as the usual automotive products like gas,
oil, tires, inner tubes, and batteries. It advertised itself as offering
Ford Supplies. They also offered towing services.
The
historic marker tells a bit of the buildings history. It was hauled
to it's second location in 1896 by a "20 mule team". Once
there it was pressed into service as a repair shop for another railroad.
Then around 1912 it was moved again, to it's current location on Santa
Fe Street in Daggett. In this location it was an auto repair shop until
WWII when it was pressed into service by the US Army.
After the war it was purchased by the Fout's in 1946. From 1946 until
the 1980's they used the building as an automobile service garage and
machine shop. Sometime after that it was purchased by the Golden Mining
and Trucking Company.
When these photos were taken it still stood on Santa Fe Street, which
is an early alignment of the National Old Trails highway in Daggett.
It is at the intersection with 4th Street.
There's
some ghost writing on the east end of the old garage.
