This is a view from the Painted Desert Inn. There are a ton of scenic view pullouts as you drive through the Painted Desert portion of the National Park.

x This is the spot inside the Park where history meets the Mother Road. In the background you can see I-40 The telephone poles a bit closer follow the abandoned roadbed of historic Route 66 at this point, the rusty old car is a vintage that commonly traveled the old road. Much of the Painted Desert is on the south side of I-40. It's a 28 mile drive, so if you stop at every observation point plan on spending several hours in the park.

There are hiking trails at many of the scenic view pullouts but the views are just great whether you hike he trail or view from the pullouts!

Crossing I-40 brings you into some of the most colorful parts of the Painted Desert.

xThese are just a couple of the spectacular views as you drive through the park.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
